light

Rationale
The aim of this project is to design a light, which should consider mass-manufacturability, and the material of the light should use discarded JDCecaux poster. The challenge of this project is to explore the relation ship between industrial design and ecological sustainability through the material use. There have so many beautiful lights develop the sense of shadow in the market. I really like the tones of shadow from layers so I decide to develop this element in my light.

My light have 3 layers, each layers have 5 leaves shape piece connect together and different layer are staggered arranged which aloud the light could come through. I have chosen a poster, which contains tones of purple and blue. I think these color could works well to build a layering tones of shadow. Each layer has a different angle of slop that increase the area of light comes through. I want my design is ecological through the material with simple shape and appealing based on its function and safety. The construction strips will keep the shapes move away from the light bulb.

The main challenge in this design is to make the light easy assemble and disassemble and flat packed in a box. It is also hard to find a solution to immobile the staggered layer arrange and make it easy to assembled. Finally I decide to make 5 construction strips to fixed shape. Each strip fixed between leave shape pieces in the first layer, then the strips with folding part in first layer interlocking into the second layer finally strips fix the bottom layer construct a staggered arranged shape. The problem of this method is the steps are little complicated but it also have advantage is the shape could be fixed very well and not move.

Personally, light design should consider a lot of the function and beauty, a good light could increase a flavor of romantic or other feelings. I hope my light could give people a comfortable and enjoyable feelings.

what is design-video

In this video Bill Moggridge indicate what is design and provide some examples of good design and bad design. He also gives us ideas about what designer should concerned about consumers. Personally design is that area of human experience, skill and knowledge which is concerned with man’s ability to mould his environment to suit his material and spiritual needs.
BILL said that “everything is design”. There have wide variety of product in our life like buildings furniture jewelry and so on. The design award projects have been shown us as examples of good design.
Good design could be something especially designed for the special groups like older people children or disability and good design is designed for everybody as well.
As a designer, the most important thing should be concerned is about people, but also the product should be useful useable producible desirable profitable and differentiated. Design disciplines form teams for complex problems.
There also have an example shown of the future design which is a multimedia service system could control by human oral instructions like make a phone call and auto navigation.
The video also give us examples of bad design. Bill said that, the key factors in the design process understand people and prototyping.
There have an example shows that In Japan there is a program on the phone network can purchase product on the vending machine. But it takes a long time to connect the internet and download the program in first time. Nobody would like to wait 35 minutes buy a drink.
BILL also provides some methods about design for different people.
Learn~ Analyze the information you’ve collected: flow analysis affinity diagrams, cognitive task and historical analysis
Look~ Observe people to find out what they do: personal inventory, a day in the life, shadowing.
Ask~ Enlist people’s participation to elicit insights: conceptual the landscape experience, collage, foreign correspondents and draw.
Try~ Create simulations to help empathize with people
There also have 3 stages of prototyping: inspire, evolve, validate
In conclusion, design is a way of solving different problems. The problem from special group of people, or the problems from everyone.

projectone experience enrichment

Spring scissors rationale
This is a pair of scissors that design to use easier, comfortable and it is really different than the other scissors. Ergonomics design is to fit human hand shape, allowed the user use much confortable for longer time. for all tools a “C” shape handle back is the best shape to fit the curve of the hand also I design to use rubber, rubber is good to be the handle, it is not too soft and not too hard, it can change a little bit of the shape to fit every user, rubber have a non slip surface, people can easy hold and will not slip.
This scissors got a spring, it different than the other spring, it is not a roll shape spring, it is a “V” shape spring, stronger than the roll shape spring but will not need to use much strength to us it, every time when the user cut something it will auto open again, it is good to let people cut fast and good for old people to use it,
The spring idea is from the pliers, what I think is when cutting things, normally need to cut a lot, so the scissors will auto open is better, however normal pliers spring don’t have enough strength, when cutting something too hard, maybe stuck. so I need to think a kind of new spring, that’s why I use two elasticity metal to make a spring.
Second why not using the old style scissors handle, the design of my scissor can have more space to hold, so it can let the user exert more strength to cut things that are hard like cardboard or plastic, it can also put one side of the handle on the table and us hole hand the push another side of the handle to cut something that is really hard to cut.

sketches

Video: Annie Leonard

After this video, I found that when we buy a product, we only attention the exterior and the function of the product, we didn’t think that much of the history of a product, in here history not mean the design or the evolution of a product, it mean from the Extraction --> Production --> Distribution --> Consumption --> Disposal.
In this history of a product, most of the steps are hide, in my own view, I think it is intentionally, by teaching the wrong things to the children, in the video it point out that in 1950’s industrial designer is to design how to make the things break early, but to keep people still buy more stuff. Start to teaching the children, only let them see the better half, to hide the rest of the bad. Parents buy lot’s of stuff to the child, start from Gameboy, GBA, NDS, PSP, to wii, Xbox, after the child get a new toys, they know is to throw the old toys, it give them a bad habit.
However now day, some of the designer try to save the earth, save the nature, they try to use the things that people throw out, for example, schamburg and alvisse, “Recopol”, but this is address the symptoms, not the cause, to do it better it need to start from the factory, factory make things that are more tough, things can use longer, then can use less material to make things that can use longer time, start recycle from factory is better than recycle from family, to make things better we need to start from the begging.
Government become the tools of the consortium, product design become the assassin of the nature pollution. The government and the consortium because of money, to destroy the earth, to teach the people wrong things, designer design better things is not to give people a better or happy life, is to give people pressure, a harder life, people need to work harder, to but the same function things for a few times, however after all that they don’t have much time to use it.

design career

What bring me to become a industrial designer, the main reason I think is because of my uncle, a very successful man, he worked in China, when I was young he always bring me some funny, interesting toys that he design and handmade of wood, when I grow up I found that he work in a big toys company, as a designer, I learn from him how to use the tools, how to draw, that’s why when I was 16 I want to become a industrial designer, to design things that I like, good outlook, creative product. Another reason I want to learn industrial design, is because industrial is different than the other design subject, industrial design is a big area subject, everything we use in daily life can also design by industrial designer and my dream is to design a product that can fit everyone to use. The last reason is after school, every product need a designer to design, product design, industrial design maybe is the most popular design job in the world.
I want to design a design that can fit anyone, no matter tools, mobile phone or any product, just hope to design one things that can fit everyone. However until now still don’t have any idea what to design, how to design. I have see a lot of design, that can also fit for most of the people, however still can’t let everyone like it, fit it.
Why will I choose industrial design in UNSW other than the other university, last year when I study foundation in UNSW, I heard about industrial design is one of best career in UNSW, UNSW bring out a lot of good industrial designer, also UNSW teacher all are good designer, I am really happy that can learn from all the good designer. Also some of my friends also study the same career with me. For me Industrial design is not only a subject career, is also my dream, industrial design can let me learn how to make the product, what design is good. UNSW is a good place for study, for learning.
I still don’t know what future is good for me, it is still too early for me, I need to know what can I learn, what will I learn, how much I learn before I choose my future, design change every day, new idea come out from designer every day, three years later will be really different, so I still can’t choose my future.

Video: David Kelley on TED > Human Centred Design

David Kelley the founder of IDEO, he created a stanford's school of design D-school. From a engineer change to a initiate" Human-centered Design" designer. In this video he introduce a few design from his company, that is focus on product design. Then he start his topic Human-centered Design. Human-centered Design is much focus on human, is a special kind of design that unlike the other design, most design is also design to help people, solve there problem, technology and good out shape is also a big part of these design. But Human-centered design is back to what human need, these kind of design is use to solve the most basic and practical problems.
Inside this video, David have introduce a few Human-centered Design, the last design "Money maker deep lift pump" is sure a Human-centred design, it solve Kenya's water shortage, irrigation problems, making easy tools maybe don't have much technology, but this is what they need, not big machine, what they want is tools that is cheap, easy to use. Think about what people really want, to design what people really need. This is Human-centered design, think from human, think for human.
For the PRADA design this is another kind of Human-centred Design, this is also base on what human want, is to let the sales know what the customer want,, then they can base on what the customers want to suggest product to the customers, also the mirror, this is what the customers want, they want to know everything about the product, they want to know who design, all the information about the product, and the display board outside will let the customers know everything, and the mirror can let the customer know how it look from any angle. This is also think from human, think for customers.
Children want fun, worker want there own lovely working space, this is all what human want, design for human, design a things that what human need.

Video reflection: emotional design

In Don Normans 2003 TED talk, I have got the idea that a good design even it is useless or ugly, people can get the story and have fun from it. This is the way how design impact people to enjoy their life. In this video Don Normans has mentioned about 3 levels of emotional design, which are Visceral, Behavioural and Reflective.
Human is emotional animal, when human choose to buy things, not just think about the function, also mind on the outlook, packing of a product, that’s why designer will keep designing the same function product, but with different outlook, different color, shape is also a point that can effect people to choose it other than the simple product.
When customer but a product, they will attract by something that is fun or outstanding shape or color other than useful, for example iphone4, early in 2010, iphone4 have been sell out, even people got iphone 3gs on there hand, because of the better shape, quality, people will choose to but iphone4, iphone4 only got black color in the early half year of 2011, start from May Apple start to sell out iphone4 white color, people who are holding black iphone4, still spending money to buy a white version, why? This is emotional, some people prefer white color more, but before they choose white color, they prefer the function of iphone4.
People mood will also effect the customer and the designer, red [exciting, angry], green [peaceful], blue [sad, relax], colorful [happy]. Depends on the mood, the outcome of the design will be effect by the designer, he product that a customer will buy will be different.
A length of a design life, not only because of its own time, more is how much people love the design the product. People will increase the frequency and time of using a product because of the emotional and love, while using it in the process, will bring us happy and pleasure, which is the value of emotional design.
