light

Rationale
The aim of this project is to design a light, which should consider mass-manufacturability, and the material of the light should use discarded JDCecaux poster. The challenge of this project is to explore the relation ship between industrial design and ecological sustainability through the material use. There have so many beautiful lights develop the sense of shadow in the market. I really like the tones of shadow from layers so I decide to develop this element in my light.

My light have 3 layers, each layers have 5 leaves shape piece connect together and different layer are staggered arranged which aloud the light could come through. I have chosen a poster, which contains tones of purple and blue. I think these color could works well to build a layering tones of shadow. Each layer has a different angle of slop that increase the area of light comes through. I want my design is ecological through the material with simple shape and appealing based on its function and safety. The construction strips will keep the shapes move away from the light bulb.

The main challenge in this design is to make the light easy assemble and disassemble and flat packed in a box. It is also hard to find a solution to immobile the staggered layer arrange and make it easy to assembled. Finally I decide to make 5 construction strips to fixed shape. Each strip fixed between leave shape pieces in the first layer, then the strips with folding part in first layer interlocking into the second layer finally strips fix the bottom layer construct a staggered arranged shape. The problem of this method is the steps are little complicated but it also have advantage is the shape could be fixed very well and not move.

Personally, light design should consider a lot of the function and beauty, a good light could increase a flavor of romantic or other feelings. I hope my light could give people a comfortable and enjoyable feelings.

  1. I love the use of the interior colours. To me if feels like a light of nature with its flower like shapes and bright colours. I love the way the light reflects differently off each piece. You could explore continuing the lights so that the pieces get smaller brining the light to a close.

  2. I really like the organic shape, and this coupled with th colour of the poster make it a really vibrant lamp. The way the light flows down the pieces reminds me of when its raining and i drips of things. Like you said before, a brighter light would have made it even better.

  3. Hey, i really enjoyed the colourful pieces of your lamp, it reminds me off a tropical island somewhere and is very aesthetically pleasing to look at. I was just looking at your cutting diagram and thought maybe there is an easier way to get the organic shape but with less wastage in between each flap that has been cutout. but, altogether, great design.

  4. hi, your lamp is full of different colors, that's really a pleasure product. and on your poster, it shows two situation of the lamp which are turned on and off. both has very good effect. when it is turned on, the illumination effect is so good comes through the gaps, and looks like an gleamy flower.
and when the lamp is turned off, the white color and the bright color make contrast, and it is also a good pendant sculpture.
in my opinion, the instruction makes me quite confuse about how to set up the lamp. you should better show a clearly overall photo and tell what's gonna be for each part.

  5. The lamp looks very organic and nice both when it is on and off. It is good to put colorful size inside to show a white view when the light off and has another effect when it's on. One thing need to be improved might be the wastage. I think you can change the shape a little bit to make each pieces can connected to each other to reduce extra wastage. Also different dimensions of the shape may make it more interesting.
