T2 VIDEO REFLECTION: Video 3: improving product lifetime

This video tells the relationship between the product and product waste. Through the product life time it inspired me how to achieve the environmental friendly target.
The first point is we should consider the energy waste behind the product. In the video, it said there have 8kg waste behind to produce a mobile phone. If we could extend the product durability we are actually reducing the pollution.
The second point is for designing sustainable product if the lifecycle could without virgin material and waste that means we don’t need more recourse and also we don’t create any waste.
The third point is when designing product we should consider the product intended use. Like the food packaging we cannot design something just used for a second and cost thousand years to be biodegradation in the environment.
In conclusion, extending product life and find a way to design product without waste is important problems that we should figure out. The right strategy should be chosen for specific design.

T2 VIDEO REFLECTION:Video 2: whole systems and lifecycle thinking

In this video introduced 2 way of thinking which is whole systems thinking and life cycle thinking. Both way could help us finding out the problems and give us a start point to get the solutions.
The first point is about the whole systems thinking which is the whole picture how the product impact society, environment and how the technology, human support of the product. This is like the big mind map that could help us find out which part of the system could have a chance to improve.
The second point is the lifecycle thinking. That is a way of finding the opportunity of innovation or improvement of nowadays product through it lifecycle
The third important point is the sustainable design strategies. The steps are define the problem by looking the whole system then prioritize objectives by assessing life-cycle impacts then brainstorm solutions by looking at the whole system finally use metrics to evaluate and choose the best solution.
In conclusion, this is the whole system of brain storming about the product problem finding and finding the solutions by a very logical way. There will have many amazing solutions by using this system of thinking.

T2 video reflection:Video 1: Greenfly: design greener products

This video basically introduces the process about how to use the greenfly web to calculate the product environmental friendly value.
The first point I learned from this video is as a designer we need to consider a lot more for environmental friendly design. It is not just about using recyclable material we should consider all the factors like material, manufacturing, market price, recycle process. We need to make sure these combination factors could works well for a successful product and end of life.
The second point I think it is important that are we designing product is durability or easy to recycle. Sometimes we cannot archive both target so as a designer we need to consider which direction is better for the project.
The third point is the environmental friendly of the product report is more and more important in the future. The website gives us a clear demonstration of the lifecycle of the product and it is a good way for us to test the design proposal.
In conclusion I think as a designer we have the responsibility to figure out the solution of making the product works well and pass the marketing testing and also benefit the environment.

WEEK2 REFLECTION

In this week I did the research about the shape of bottle, closure, the positioning of the logo design and I also did an experiment that how to wash hand by just using one hand. I find out the shape of hand washing bottle are more likely short rounded body or curved body. Through the experiment I found the foam press system is much easier to press out liquid. So I decide this is the best choice for my design. During the experiment I also found it is pretty hard to clean the gaps between fingers so I want to figure out the way to solve this problem and my tutor said this shouldn’t come with a part of packaging and this is a good point.
My tutor gave me some suggestion like I need to redefine the shape, because the shape of my design is more like kitchen bottle design. My classmates also give me some advice.  QIUYUAN LIN said I should think about the dimensions of the gap because I need to make sure different size of fingers could fit in. A exchange student from China suggest me I could redesign the shape of foam press system, design the drop point in the middle of a bar and leave the gap underneath.

reflection of tutor comment

This week I came up 3 ideas which are hand wash bottles, pills bottle and tooth paste packaging.

I am focusing on disability of one hand. The main causes are congenital, tumer, paralysis, cerebral palsy and trauma.

I decide to develop the first concept which is hand wash bottle. It also could use as lotion bottle, shampoo bottle, any bottle contain liquid and apply to human body. the aim of my design is providing a convenient system bottle for single hand user. the product are functional aesthetic and recyclable.

The design has a little holding gap on the side so pp could use fingers attach the gap and use thumb press the pressing device to get washing liquid. My tutor gives me a very important advice that I need to figure out the position and distance between the gap and pressing devise. Because if the distance are not accurate, user will easily to press the wrong mechanical point then the pressing device will be broken easily. So I need to pretend to be a single hand user and figure out the exactly shape and dimension of the ergonomic bottle to suit for one hand disabled user.
